Want to work on a construction site in Australia? You will need a White Card (also known as a General Construction Induction Card). Here is everything you need to know.
What Is a White Card?
A White Card certifies that you have completed general construction induction training under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations. It is mandatory for anyone who wants to work on a construction site anywhere in Australia.
Who Needs One?
Everyone. Whether you are a labourer, electrician, project manager, or delivery driver entering a construction site — you need a White Card.
How to Get Your White Card
Step 1: Complete the Training
You need to complete the CPCCWHS1001 — Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry unit. This can be done:
- In person — One-day course at a registered training organisation (RTO)
- Online — Blended learning with online theory and a practical assessment
Cost: Typically $80-$150 depending on the provider.
Step 2: Receive Your Statement of Attainment
Once you pass, the RTO issues a Statement of Attainment. This is your proof of completion.
Step 3: Apply for Your White Card
Depending on your state, you may need to apply through the relevant authority:
- NSW: SafeWork NSW
- QLD: Workplace Health and Safety Queensland
- VIC: WorkSafe Victoria
- WA: WorkSafe WA
Step 4: Receive Your Card
Your physical card usually arrives within 2-4 weeks. In the meantime, your Statement of Attainment and receipt can serve as temporary proof.
Important Things to Know
- White Cards are nationally recognised — one card works in every state
- There is no expiry date on a White Card
- If you lose your card, you can get a replacement through your state authority
- Online-only courses are not valid — there must be a face-to-face or live assessment component
